Therapeutic Touch™ (TT™) and Nurse Healers Professional Associates International (NH-PAI) Therapeutic Touch™ Therapeutic Touch™ (TT™) is a scientifically based healing practice in which the human being is viewed as a complex, dynamic whole and healing is seen as the means of restoring integrity of the body, mind, emotion and spirit. In this integrative therapy, the practitioner uses the hands as a focus to work with the energy flow in the vital energy field of the recipient to facilitate the healing process. This intentionally directed healing process of energy exchange is a contemporary interpretation of several ancient healing practices. The practitioner maintains a state of centered intentionally wherein she noninvasively directs energy to the client. Intentionally is directed to activating an energy exchange that re-balances and increases the vital energy available to the human energy system. Once the system is energized, the human field directs itself to a healthier pattern, involving body, mind, emotion and spirit. Dr Dolores Krieger, professor emerita of New York University and Dora Van Gelder Kunz, a Natural Healer, developed TT™ in the early 1970's. Therapeutic Touch™ is an integrative therapy and works well with other therapies. The two guiding principles of TT™ are Compassion and Intentionality. Alternate for TT™ - Pat Winstead-Fry, PhD, RN
I am
a nurse who has been practicing Therapeutic Touch and visualization for almost
25 years. I recently added Tellington T-touch to my skills. My
main interest is CAM research on these difficult subjects. With Dee Krieger,
I developed the Subjective Experience of Therapeutic Touch Scale that can be
used to document that the healer is doing Therapeutic Touch. It can also
be used to assess growth of TT abilities as one moves from learner to more
experienced practitioner.
Probably
my most creative use of TT is in my work with feral cats. The cats are
very frightened of people. Using TT as well as other training methods, I
have a just about perfect record of getting the cats socialized and adopted
into good homes. The Shelter I help with these difficult animals was
about to give up on accepting them until I demonstrated that one can
be successful. It takes a tremendous effort.
With
Dr. Mary Madrid, we are finishing a study using TT in an endovascular surgery
environment. There are anecdotes about TT in the operating room, but this
will be the first controlled, clinical trial. I wish I had the data
analyzed so I could tell you the results we obtained. That will come
later.
